Unsettling Books
I'm going to have to start a new section of this blog called "Goddamned Creepy Books for Children" because I read Slightly Invisible Featuring Charlie and Lola tonight (from yesterday's library trip) and it was so damn creepy that I still have the creeps. Can you see that shadow figure sitting at the table with Charlie and Lola and Marv? I couldn't. Not at first. And then I discovered that Lola's invisible friend had been following her around the whole time. Creepy.

Where Everybody Be?
P. is very concerned about something that happened once on Yo Gabba Gabba. Muno knocked down Brobee's block tower. Then he sang a song about it. When P. wants you to pay attention to something she is doing or saying, she repeats this story, over and over, until you pay attention. "Muno knocked Brobee tower. I'm sorry?"
Also, these days she spends a lot of time categorizing things that are scary or not scary. The smashed-up truck parked at the base of our stairs was scary. Until this morning when she told me "red truck broken, not scary."

soon
I will post pictures of our wonderful trip to Northern California soon...
On the long (although shorter) drive home, P. sat in the back requesting repeatedly that we turn around and go "back gramma's house." Then she would ask, plaintively, "where everybody be?"

now is the time
We need to go on record. Caillou is terrible and must be stopped. I never knew that anything Canadian could be so terrible.
Watch Caillou?
No. Watch. Caillou.
Watch Caillou?
No. Watch. Caillou.

cut us some slack
Fine, fine. We know it's a crazy parent move to post a blurry, smudged picture from the bath. But tonight she drew a picture of herself with hands, feet, hair, eyes, noses, and mouth. We were so excited that we high-fived. Sometimes you just have to bask in the nice parts of having a toddler. Because then there are the other parts....

robots
Last night, as I was tucking 8 wooden robot blocks under a cozy blanket so they could more comfortably enjoy my fourth reading of a wordless West German book about municipal vehicles from 1984, it occurred to me that I am really the parent of a child. Not a baby, a child. A child with a well-developed sense of the important role robots play in our everyday life. A child who demands to be fed ice cream in the bath. A child who is deeply concerned with well-being of fallen trashcans.

Names
I think that Poppy just lost to the 4 syllable full name.
"Whose daddy is that?" "Penelope's daddy!"

home sick
It is 80 degrees outside, but we are deep into cold and flu season around here. A couple weeks ago, P. had her second round of Hand, Foot, and Mouth and now she is two days into a really nasty case of Strep Throat. Our apartment has seen its fair share of screaming and sobbing in the past few weeks.
She is just old enough to assert that no, thank you, she would not like to take the medicine that you claim will make her feel better. Nor, thanks for asking, would she like to go see the doctor.
UPDATE: She just told me that her throat is feeling much better. "Mouth no hurts more. All better!"
And now she is eating ice cream, happily. Phew.
